3. Are you aware that WA only has one diamond mine? They announced redundancies yesterday. Opal mining is carried out, but it is very small scale - largely individuals with a pick. Also, diamond mines will require a degree, plus usually a DeBeers accreditation.
4. I wouldn't worry about it. I have never been asked for it and I dont know anyone that has, including guys with 20+ years in the game. Far more important to be able to act as competent person for reporting. I have a mate in Greenland with Black Angel who loves it.
5. As you know, I prefer FIFO. It is the shorter swings that keeps me in Oz as I prefer not to go back to long swings. Week on week off suits me fine. In saying that, roles for me in greenfield exploration are becoming thinner and thinner on the ground in Oz and I am now looking at roles outside of Oz. I have put my hand in for a role in Spain and another in Ireland. The later are offering a salary about what I get now and it would be residential. I do find that the long fifo rosters can be good, if the job is good. Best job I have had was in china on a 7:1. Would go back in a flash. I know, having done several years of brownfield / near mine exploration, I never want to see a mine again.
6. Funny, as we do the same job, but one of the main factors if we left would be to chase the higher money available outside Oz.
7.

Thanks. It certainly is. It's the down side of living here.

8. If there is one thing i have learned it is that there are more "A" typical deposits than typical lol. That and when the industry thinks an area is unlikely to be Au hosting purely based on geology, it may well be wrong. I worked on the Tropicana discovery team. An area which everyone assumed would never host gold (grantic gneiss in a mobile belt). 7 million Oz says they were wrong.
9. All of the big miners take apprenterships. Check out their web sites. Rio are advertising at the moment. As for fourcorners comment, that is very true. Salaries do often progress more slowly than for miners. And it's not unusual at some mines for a truckie to start on more than a grad geo. However, while most unskilled miners will never reach the real big money such as jumbo's most geo's will get bigger money. Then there is the nature of the work. I can't imagine a more dull job than truckie. Particularly in a pit. While geo is one of the most interesting jobs on the planet and has given me e opportunity to work in countries around the world.
10. We have a large pit and ug and actually pay ug now less than pit as there is bigger demand for experienced staff with pit experience across WA
11. Main job sites are seek.com.au and infomine.com
12. Some general advice. I work in mining and a few things people need to consider. There are no shortages of unskilled staff for mining. We get bag loads of applications for entry level roles. That includes truck drivers which we consider entry level. Be aware that there is not big money at this level. For example we start underground truckies on $75k for a week of nights, then a week of days and then 6 days off. You may be stuck doing this for a long time (years). Pit truckies get a bit more, but that is the single most boring job on the planet. It's not unusual for people to last one swing! Do think about how you will cope working away from family. There is good reason why mental illness is very prevalent in the industry. If anyone has specific questions feel free to email me at cnellist@anglogolashanti.com
13. Do you do the service the other way? We are considering a move back to the UK in the back end of 2012 and have a small chihuahua.
