blobby1000
We are permanent residents of Australia (granted August 2011). We wont be staying to get citizenship but I am keen that we retain our permanent residency in case we ever decide to return. I am confused about this. On our initial visa can we keep this so long as we re-enter Australia within 5 years of the visa being granted? Or do we need to get a 5 year resident return visa and then renew this from the Uk every five years. In other words if we get the RRV and renew every 5 years, in theory, if the rules stay the same, could we or our kids return aged 60 and live here..... toOZ2012
Hi, Your PR is forever but in order to leave and enter Australia you'll need something called a return visa, which is only granted for 5 years at time. In order to renew you'll have to stay 2 of those 5 years in Australia or demonstrate some significant ties to Australia. http://www.immi.gov.au/migrants/residents/155/eligibility.htm

Guest
So, to answer one of your questions. No you cannot keep renewing your RRV every five years, without spending a significant amount of time in Australia. Eventually it will mean your PR has effectively expired.
