wakeboard1980
Every day, in Sydney and other states at least one stabbing, shooting, knife attack, king hit makes the headlines. And those are the ones that make the headlines! It's a big city Sydney. The biggest in Aus. It doesn't surprise me one bit. Bout the same size as Manchester I think. Guest The Ropey HOFF
Merely observations! When I lived in London don't remember seeing this stuff on a daily basis. So you don't remember a few years back in London in one year 29 teenagers were stabbed to death, that's not counting the countless other murders, it's continuously on the news. Guest chris955
The point really is when you have lived in both countries you honestly see there is nothing between the two places, there are places in both countries that you would avoid. I have never been DIRECTLY a victim in either country but have witnessed it in both.
Guest chris955
Most of us who have lived in Australia will vividly remember the incredible gangland violence and murders which I think are still ongoing. Same crap different bucket.
calNgary
It was the murder of a child my sons age just a few miles from our house, that 'put the icing on the cake' in relation to our move to Aus... Thankfully i feel much safer where i am here on the outskirts of Brisbane to back in the UK on the outskirts of Greater Manchester. As for murders in Australia, a hell of alot seem to be carried out by the spouse or off spring ,rather than random attacks. I have never had dealings with domestic abuse but wonder if its more popular here. Cal x
MicheleW
Lol wouldn't know haven't been in Brisbane I have but maybe it's a south of the river thing, particularly around the Logan/Shailer Park areas??? Though strictly speaking Logan is a city and therefore isn't part of Brisbane.
Perthbum
Crime is the same in both countries, statistics fir every crime are roughly the same per head of population, I have lived in London and was out after midnight on hundreds if occasions without. Problem, I was mugged twice in Perth after midnight but that does not make me think Perth is worse, I was just unlucky, compared to France and other European countries and countries around the world oz and the UK are safe places to live, anyone seen Ross kemps tv programmes? Have a look at the one when heis in Venezuela and then thank god you live in low crime countries.
colinmaclec
So that's why you hate Perth! To be honest i would say its safer walking around Perth City centre at night than London. And when was the last time you had kids rioting and burning peoples homes in oz?

From news reports about 3 times in the last 2 weeks! 100s of kids going to parties arranged on the internet, destroying the home, police called, throwing glass bottles at police, setting stuff on fire, think one involved a stabbing. colinmaclec
yes i seen 1 of those on the news but i was referring to the riots that went on for about a week in all the big English cities. We didn't get them in Scotland as we don't have the 'gangsta rappa' culture
flag of convenience
The thing is it happens so much in the UK that they don't bother reporting about it any more as they have enough news. Over here even a car crash makes front the headlines I don't find such incidents get reported at least in WA press that happen in other states. If so it would indeed appear a lot. We get more than enough aggro for a small population to keep us on our toes.

Both cities I have witnessed unfortunate goings on,but been involved far more over time in Perth. Reason being there are fewer folk around late at night. For years I took a train at 11pm from Eastern suburbs to the centre after work and had ten times more personal harrassment than experienced in London. As has been said it happens just on a smaller scale but it is ridiculous to use a very regrettable one off incident like we saw in the UK to talk about day to day life in either country. It seems clear that both countries are equally 'dangerous' if you are in the wrong place.
Kapri
I wouldn't imagine there's a huge difference in crime rates between U.K and Australia, but there may be a huge difference depending on where you move from and to. If I move from sleepy Dorset to Sydney (or indeed any city) I am going to see a massive increase in crime. If someone moves from Nottingham to the quieter suburbs of Adelaide, or rural Australia, they are likely to see a decrease in crime.

Yeh the trains at night seem to be nasty..Colleages friend was set on by a grout of youths at night..nobody else in the carriage. They asked for his money, which he gave them, then beat him up and stabbed him, same girl had another friend who went to stop a nasty situation in the street, when he for attacked, beaten and stabbed 3 times, so his mate tried to help and he got beaten up. Guess what..they got a good behaviour bond!!
pablo
Crime and violent crime isnt something i woprry about in Aus tbh,i dare say its there,i read enuf in the Adelaide papers re bikie gangs etc,but i dont think it will be much worse than here in general. My city is tiny compared to Sydney and and many other cities in the uk and Aus,but there was 6 shootings in a week the other month, thankfully they just target each other mostly, but now and again innocents like young Rhys Jones have died in the crossfire. Loads more stuff isnt reported for fear of reprisals, stuff people know about but not the police. Ive seen someone shot in the leg on a sunday afternoon in the pub,and seen somebody get beaten up that badly they later died,as well as various stabbings etc etc,its everywhere isnt it,Aus wont be any different
flag of convenience
I couldn't say for Sydney I've never lived there but I felt safe in Melbourne and I feel safe in Cairns. But I wonder did/do you walk around Melbourne or Cairns late at night.

It seems clear that both countries are equally 'dangerous' if you are in the wrong place. It was hardly a one off incident as it took place in multiple cities over the space of a week. And i wouldn't be surprised to see more incidents like this in the future. The UK has a large gang culture and that is a problem on the increase not decrease. I have yet to see gangs of 30 plus kids hanging around street corners harrasing people that walk by etc here. I am sure it would be on the news if it was common as in Perth they report on Cats being rescued out of trees. Both countries have their problems but as the UK is more dense if you live in the big cities the bad estates are never far away. Oz is more spread out so you tend to be further away from the dodgy areas.
Jacaranda
Oh and the pub in Middlesborough the previous landlady got pool cued when she was 6 months pregnant and her husband glassed. The locals carried and when it was kicking out time I was faced with F off and make us. Did you research the pub/area before taking it on?Sounds like the equiv of a burb of Adelaide I used to live in (temporarily thank god!)

There was a lot of unwanton damage and destruction but my take on it anyone could have been present without fear of personal safety. Providing not doing something silly like filming those participating..naturally.
