I will be moving to Aust permanently in about 4 months, and I have no friends or family there. I am an Software Engineer with 8 years of experience on MS.NET and would love to live in a city where the cost of living is not too high . Please advise on your thoughts on the following cities-Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide.

Anxious abt job prospects, quality of life, safety etc. Thanks guys :)

Job prospects likely higher in bigger cities such as Sydney or Melbourne however cost of living is high. Perth has very high cost of living and appears to be declining. Brisbane and Adelaide more affordable but depends on jobs....

Brisbane is awesome though! I may be a bit biased though

You should go where the work is, cost of living becomes irrelevant if you have to leave because there is no work.

In terms of accommodation be it rent or buying the cities would be ordered as follows from most expensive to cheapest: Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane Adelaide.

In terms of everything else, well I spend a lot of time in Brisbane and I notice that day to day cost of living seems a bit higher in Brisbane than Sydney, I seem to spend a fortune on coffee and lunches and meals when I am up there in comparison to Sydney. I also expect that Perth would be very high because of the cost of transporting goods there.

Thanks. I see lot of job opportunities in Sydney/Melbourne... What would be the cost of a temporary accommodation in Melbourne? Planning to stay in a cheap place till I get some good job and then shift my family from India to a nice place.

Thanks Rupert for the advice. Which place do you suggest to start my job search? How much does temporary accommodation would cost?

For IT jobs, I think you'd be better off in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Aside from http://www.seek.com.au, there is also http://www.mycareer.com.au. Try both. Most companies will advertise on both but there will be some that will advertise in one or the other. There are also several recruitment agencies that are focused mainly on hiring IT professionals. Most, if not all, will want you to be in the country or city before they will even see you.

The cost of temporary housing varies. I've calculated it at a minimum and you can see it here. http://finderskeeperspl.com/why-use-us/

You can also check the following websites for temporary accommodation http://www.stayz.com.au http://www.airbnb

To look for a permanent rental, then http://www.realestate.com.au http://www.domain.com.au will be good places to start. But choose the city you think will address a possible career first then the rest will fall into place, as Rupert said.

I would start in Sydney or Melbourne for IT jobs. Your accommodation can cost anything from a couple of hundred to a couple of thousand and everything inbetween.
