Wellers and Whitehead
On behalf of my friend who was on a whv in 1998, she can attempt at claiming her tax back I believe and what about the super she paid? How does she go about trying to get some of this back if eligible? Who does she need to contact in the UK where she lives? Thanks in advance! Joebloggs
About 3 years ago the government decided that they were going to grab inactive superannuation accounts (those that had been idle for 5 years or more) mostly belonging to backpackers and short term workers that are no longer in the country. For tax return I think you can go back 5 years, I'm unsure if you can go back as far as 15.
NickyNook
I assume your friend didn't lodge a tax return back in 1998? If so, then I'd imagine the fine for failing to do so (after such a long time) would wipe out any rebate due ;-) I'd forget about trying to get any tax back. She should be able to get the super, though. Google 'unclaimed super'. There are instructions online about how to do it.
Rupert
I would also forget about the tax, WHV holders always assume they are due a refund, but half the time they end up owing money anyway as they should have paid non resident rates but didn't. blossom
I was in a whv in 1999 and backpackers were not due refunds because of the visa as far as I know.

I got my tax back from whv and another girl I know recently got a few grand back, so u may be entitled to it!? I rang to see if I had claimed my tax from 13 years ago..luckily the tax agent I used was still open and they said they paid me by cheque...was hoping to get over a grand back but I'd already had it! Ha..gutted!
