Sammy1
Hi guys, I'm moving to WA in 4 weeks and need to get registered with TRBWA and wondered if anyone can help me with the process please? Do I need to I need to apply via the 'Request for Qualification Advice' form because I was thinking that my AITSL pass certificate would have been enough. It seems daft that I have to be assessed all over again! Any help is greatly appreciated! The Teaching Registration Boards have nothing to do with AITSL. You will need to provide all of your academic transcripts, supervised teaching days and visa status. It can take a few weeks, but as you already have your documents from AITSL, that will help speed it up. You will also need to pay a fee to register and you will most likely apply for limited registration as you will not meet the Professional Standards requirement yet. http://www.trb.wa.gov.au/teacher_registrations/Becoming_registered/Pages/default.aspx http://www.trb.wa.gov.au/teacher_registrations/Becoming_registered/Overseas-qualified/Pages/default.aspx Edited August 7, 2014 by Sammy1

Hayley Gee
Hi I am planning to move to Maroochydore/ Noosa area in March 2015. I currently work in Destination and travel marketing but am considering doing a TEFL course for a change of career. Any views on language school opportunities in the region would be useful. Many thanks. Hayley
Rachel Minton
Hello, I am applying for positions in Victoria and having some trouble with state school central applications website. It is really old fashioned to operate and a bit of a pain. My query is about the part of an application which says 'online questionnaire', when I click on this it doesn't load anything...is it supposed to? milliem
Hi MilliemWe are planning on moving to Queensland (sunshine coast) early next year. I teach science/ chem/ bio but happy to teach maths too. Do you have any advice about finding work in Queensland? I am starting to stress out a little as there doesnt seem much. I would be happy doing supply to start but would take what ever is going. I apparently can only do the teacher application with the department once we are there. Was really hoping to have work lined up ahead of time. Hey there. Yeh there is not a great deal of work on the Sunny Coast. My job will be advertised soon as we are moving away at the end of the year. let me know if you would like me to pm details Millie x
wolvesaussie
Random update, meet a Primary School teacher on the weekend who had moved to Melbourne 6 months ago. She is only on a working holiday visa so not applying for full time jobs but is getting regular relief work 3/4 days a week at the moment, turning down work at times as she wants to explore and have long weekends. Via ANZUK . (sounds like a nice job)

Manners1983
Cracking thread, did take me a while to read through it all from the start! Just wanted to know if there are many folks on here teaching in QLD, namely primary school? Would be interested to find out a rough temperature check of the job market. Also, how many kids do get enrolled for the Preparatory Year - given it's not compulsory? This and Years 1 & 2 are the years my wife has the most amount of experience and therefore will be aiming her job hunt at. My wife and I are hoping to be heading over around this time next year (just finishing up 189 application now). Will probably be based out of Brisbane, Windaroo in fact, where my brother lives. Stokie
Hey folks, I'm brand new to this. A friend suggested it. I am from Staffordshire and have been out since January teaching senior chemistry and physics at a school in FNQ. The physics has been a challenge as it's not my specialist area - so any physicists out there please say hello. It would be good to hear from anyone from back home TBF. Thank you. Stokie
Hi wolvesaussie, A MASSIVE change - not just climate and culture but also the way the education system is run in Queensland. It's taken 3 terms to start to get to grips with it but it was a shock I wasn't expecting. I miss home sometimes but have plans to go back at Xmas for 5 weeks. It's been harder than I thought to make friends, it's pretty quiet up here in Cairns (except for the tourists - but they don't stay long). All said (apart from missing family, and oatcakes) I have no regrets. Said I'd do 2 years and then think about the future and this first year has flown. There is LOADS to do here you just have to get to it - and it usually involves a long drive/flight. How did you find the change and how are things now? Thank you for replying by the way! wolvesaussie
She has settled well, made lots of friends through a website called meet up. School wise, shes really busy as had to start again with all her lesson plans etc as was doing senior Biology in UK now doing Junior Maths science. I think she has found it a shock as to how interested the parents are.. at her UK school people didnt normally show up to see her at parent teacher night, here she is overbooked and parents are always making appointments to see her at other random times

Regards to teaching in QLD, i moved over here from NZ end of last year. It is really different here to most other places in regard to employment. You can't just apply for job vacancies as they are not advertised (only private schools) because it is all government based. The government have to interview you, give you a rating then they will offer you a permanent position somewhere where teachers are urgency needed - Regional or Far north Queensland. There is however a lot of Relief work available here. I have currently got 3 job share contracts and relieve the one day in-between. As far as permanency goes in state schools, it is a tricky now, but contract and relief if pretty good here- and pays well. :-)
Manners1983
Thanks jbar399...out of interest, what age do you teach or does it vary with each placement? I must admit the whole state/catholic/private school differentiation is quite interesting in Oz...very different from the UK ('private school' in Oz seems to have very different connotations to ‘private school’ in the UK). Also, the predilection of schools to opt for shorter-term, rolling one-year contracts rather than long term permanent positions. My wife and I have been trying to get our heads around this distinction as we think it will require quite an adjustment mentality wise. Long term job security is always going to be a concern…newly arrived migrant or not! Teaching in the UK is often seen as a job for life…i.e. very hard for the school to oust you once your feet are under the table…but that’s a debate for another thread on another forum! Hey Manner 1983, it varies with what you've been offered... Kind of take what you can get here in queensland ? I currently teach 2 year 3 classes and a year 1 class. It's only this way in Queensland, every other state to my knowledge you can apply for jobs as they are advertised. Permanent is very rare unles you have been cobttractingn to a school for a period of time whereby they can then state they need you, then it may turn into permanency. The curriculum here is very different for me coming from Nz. Not sure what it's like from uk though. Get registered with Tracer when you get here, they are the government based relief agency then contracts come from there ?

Steff1984
Hi, I am going to Perth in January and am hoping to find work as a Physical Education teacher. I have a few questions and am wondering if anyone can shed any light?? Is a medical a definite requirement? (I've heard varying reports) and I am also not sure when I am registering with the WA TRB which registration route to select as they have varying prices? I have a Post Grad Certificate in Education which I have been told allows me to teach in Perth. Does anyone know which option I would need to select when registering? I hope this makes sense!! Thanks Steff
SamAdams
Hi all! Music specialist 5 yrs experience including HoD and Head of Performing Arts. Thanks Ben for starting this chat feed. I have applied for a partner visa, does anyone know if am I allowed to apply for jobs before my visa is granted? Thanks : )
Vanduex
You can start applying but it is highly unlikely you will be considered. You would pose too much of a potential risk and there are plenty of 'safer' and closer candidates. I would advise getting visa ready and that increases your chances significantly. :-) the he good news is that I have visited a few schools this week. (Arrived on 27th Aug). At all of them they have pushed the arts. It is much bigger than I anticipated. It appears to have avoided some of the shift to a more academic curriculum. Some schools even make it the backbone of everything they do. Also I would think big if you are considering private education. The facilities I have seen have been ridiculous. Auditoriums with 500 theatre style seating. Layers of stages for actual scenery changes. May be different for you. But I have found it quite shocking. All good though! Vanduex
On another note. I thought I would share with the Teachers that after landing on the Wednesday. I interviewed for a position on the Friday. Was offered the job on the Monday. It's a great job and when considering I expected a step backwards I have actually secured something far more challenging in a top private school. British experience was important. Lots of changes here, curriculum, observations, judgements, inspections, reporting. Experience in these areas may help in the right role. I had to work for it. But it can be done. satchet
Hi Steff1984, Once you have been assessed by any one of the TRB you are eligible to teach in any state in Australia. When I was in Adelaide I had a chat with someone from the SA TRB who confirmed this. Hope this helps.
clarence17
Hi, I am trained in Malaysia and have 11 years teaching at the polytechnic (equivalent to Tafe/vocational here). This includes 3 years of university tutoring experience. I have tried to apply for teaching jobs but have been unsuccessful so far. The formalities (VIT registration and other paperwork) have been completed but I have not even been called for an interview although I have sent multiple resumes out via the website for Victorian government schools. I have even emailed the principals directly- but so far it has been thanks but no thanks. 1. Would it be appropriate to make an appointment with the admin / headmaster of the school and deliver the cover letter and resume personally? 2. Any suggested websites to apply for jobs (even CRT is fine for a start). 3. If anyone could post an example cover letter / resume, it would be great. Any other advice / suggestions to get started in a teaching career here would be great. Clarence
