jambraddock
Hello all, I was wondering if anyone had any experience with Medical Waivers? I have Crohns and take infliximab every 8 weeks via infusion. I am eligible to apply for PR on the temporary residents transition scheme next month (457 to 186) but don't want to do this if there's a chance the medical waiver will fail. For those that don't know, if your meds are gonna cost more than $40,000 over 5 years you will fail the medical. For those people the next chance is looking at medical waivers. I'm young, no dependants, and earn a good salary so have lots of positives, but before spending $12-15k I was hoping to speak with someone that has gone through the process to see if it's at all possible. Anyone have any thoughts? Sent from my iPhone using PomsinOz

Guest
You've posted this same post heaps of times in various threads. I'm going to remove all the duplicates and leave just the one thread.
Guest
I had replied in another thread but as i've deleted that... Have you consulted with a migration agent that specialises in medical conditions. They would be a good starting point if not. And if they feel you should be able to apply, perhaps consider using their services for your visa?
jambraddock
The reason I've posted in numerous threads is to notify older posters as I figure they have probably got answers either way now. Is that not allowed?Sent from my iPhone using PomsinOz
Guest
We tend not to allow duplicates asking the exact same thing. You posted the same thing in a number of threads. Plus a new thread asking the same things ETA -many who posted, especially on older threads may well no longer visit the forum either. A new thread is usually advised for these reasons. deedee
We got granted our PR. (My partner was the main applicant) I've been in remission for years & free from any medication for the last 10 years. I have had surgery due to crohns in 2000 where I had a re section. Medicals do involve a blood test & chest X Ray. I felt the same as you.. paying out all that money just to fail a medical at the end. It is stressful. We decided not to use a MARA for this reason (saving 3k) that way we hadn't paid as much out if we didn't get a grant. Good luck!!

Sent from my iPhone using PomsinOz Hi @jambraddock as mentioned no one is qualified to answer only a migration agent who specialises in health matters, have a chat with @George Lombard . I don't know a lot about Crohns or the IV side of infliximab but as an example Remicade (brand name here) 100mg of injection powder is $645.39 at Chemist Warehouse so that would be way under the $40,
ScottieGirl
Infliximab is off patent so cheaper than the alternatives. If an average cost is used based on a basket of meds it will be much higher (this is very easy for the dept to do). Definitely a case for an expert migration agent. leedarama
The problem with Inflixmab and the alternatives is that it is not the cost of the drug that is the issue.. it is the cost of having to infuse it intravenously. As in you need a nurse to put the drip in you and the whole process takes about 1-2 hours. If you have to do this every 8 weeks, potentially for the rest of your life, the costs add up.

The advise is to come off of infliximab and stay on cheaper alternative medications to successfully meet the visa health requirement. I'm keen to hear how the others made it through this obstacle. DrDougster
Can't you just swap to a biosimilar alternative? Previous posters on this topic wouldn't have had that option.

I will be bringing this up with my specialist today. Do you know if anyone made it through the medical requirement being on a bio similar though? I'm curious
