Whip Cracker
Hi all, Long time stalker, first time proper posting! Was hoping to see how many British ex pats are located here on the Sunshine Coast and also whether a group of people would like to meet up at all? My wife's originally from the West Midlands (I'm Australian) but also lived in the West Midlands briefly as well. The wife is missing home dearly and I'm sure if there is a local gathering of some Poms on the coast, we'd love to meet up! We currently have a 2 year old and one due in July we're in our early 30s. Love to grab a coffee at a local Cafe, which is our favourite pass times! We're located in Birtinya and we spend the majority of our time between Caloundra, Maroochydore and out to the Hinterland towards Nambour, Landsborough and Beerwah. Looking forward to hearing and hopefully meeting you all! Cheers

Yes live on the coast, but sadly much older than you. We knew no one when we arrived 16 years ago having retired here, and the best advice I can give you is to join lots of different clubs groups etc, and smile at everyone. There used to be a meet up group, don’t think it is still going, Perhaps try to start one. If you live near Buderim, then the Good Life Church has so many things up and running for almost everything you can think of. I think they have Baby groups, toddler groups, swimming and loads more. You don’t have to be at all involved in the church, I’m not it’s just a welcoming social place for everyone. Making friends in a new place can take time, I moved 17 times due to my husband’s job, so know it’s hard, but the first time you recognise someone when you are out is a big step forward. Good luck, Hope you find some friends quickly. pm me if your wife gets really low,

I'm a local myself and my wife has been on the coast on and off for a few years, but no doubt I reckon its great for ex pats to catch up with each other and see how everyone's adapted to the Aussie lifestyle. Trying to find others like us on the coast is definitely proving to be difficult! Cheers again

Hi there, Meaning that the lifestyle that she had in England is different to the lifestyle here on the Sunshine Coast. It's moreso home comforts that are missed (favourite foods amongst other things, etc) as well as family as well (she's the only one from her family in Oz) so possibly there might have been similar families that might have been in a similar situation. Coles and Woolworths here in Melbourne often have a lot of English foods in the International section, so that's worth checking out. Also, on the Sunshine Coast: http://wensleys.com.au/index.php/where-to-buy/ http://www.foodandparty.com.au/ However to be honest, missing food shouldn't be that big a deal if she's enjoying life otherwise, so there's obviously something bigger going on. Lots of people have been in your situation. We have lots of mixed marriages on these forums! Sadly, it's not always a happy outcome. There are some people who just can't adapt to living in a foreign country, no matter how great the life is. They're not being difficult or "not trying", it's just the way they're made - and often, they have no idea they're like that, until they try living away from home. Then they develop situational depression, which can become severe. The only cure is to go back to their home country. Let's hope that's not the case for your wife, and it's just loneliness that's getting to her, especially if she's stuck in the house with a toddler and one on the way. There's not much chance to have a lifestyle of any kind, when you're in that situation!
ramot
Our local Woolworths doesn’t have an international section any more. There used to be a shop on Bulcock st Caloundra that stocked British food, and another on the Nicklin way near the Good Guys, but I think that stocks more party goods now. i suggest ‘Tongue in cheek’ you might have to cook shepherds pie or toad in the hole, or a good old fashioned roast for her!. My mate tastes like marmite!!!! Seriously as Marisa said, it’s tough anywhere with a toddler and pregnant, let alone a new country.

Hey there, Appreciate where you're coming from and I understand where she's coming from, as I too spent time in England (nowhere near as long) however I can understand missing home comforts as well (sunlight, iced coffee and meat pies for example) were some things I really missed. My wife's enjoying life here, however I know that if I had Aussies closeby that I could catch up with and hear a familiar accent and be able to discuss things back home that people in another country might not completely appreciate or understand, I know I would have felt more at home. Nothing bigger going on at all, just honestly wanted to see if a Pommy group existed on the coast is all. There's a stack of Poms here (my mum and grandparents were 10 pound Poms, however wouldn't call them English these days) so thought it'd be nice to ask in a place where I would expect such gatherings to exist. All good at the end of the day! Thanks to all that have replied, it's much appreciated.

Looking to make some friends also, especially for me as hubby works away at sea. He would love someone to catch up with for a beer when he’s back home too. I’m trying to find the thread on socialising but not having much luck lol will keep trying!
