KangaKit
Does anyone know whether if as a family we get PR visas..if we all move to Australia but the kids finish their degrees whether those study years for them can count towards the 4 years needed for citizenship? If so those years will count If they do them in the UK but "come home" to you on all the holidays then some of that time in Oz will also count, but it will take longer to reach the threshold and you have to be aware that the last year before you apply you can only be away for 3 months at most, and only 12 months in the four year period - so if you time it right the last two years of Uni could count as residence years to qualify. All down to exact dates and other time out of country

rammygirl
Everyone over 16 needs to qualify for citizenship in their own right. So currently needs 4 years in Aus with no more than 1 year in total out with no more than 90 days out in the final year. It is the same with us. Our youngest son was first to qualify then us and our eldest has still to qualify.
KangaKit
Ah ok..thank you. .so I'm guessing 3 years of just uni holidays won't be counted towards it?

They would have been out of the country more than the 12 months permitted. They also can not be out of the country more than 90 days in the 12 months prior to application. KangaKit
Maybe the last two years though might count if not leaving aus when finished uni? And then stay in Australia following uni? Then they'll just need another 2 years?

rammygirl
Time outside Australia after validating their visas does count towards citizenship as you are allowed 12 months outside of Australia. Example. Validate visa on 1st Jan 2019, return to UK and spend 18 months away before returning on 1st June 2020. If no more holidays outside Australia they will qualify for citizenship on the 2nd June 2023, three years after returning. Looking back 5 years from that point they will have satisfied the requirements. Any additional holidays will push the qualifying date out correspondingly as you are allowed a maximum of 1 year outside Aus after first entry. This was the case for us as we validated, went home then came to settle later. You also need to be aware that these are the CURRENT rules as as we know things can change. They also need to be aware of the travel rights on the visa which only last 5 years from grant, after that to re enter Aus they will need an RRV or citizenship.
