Nanna
I would love to hear suggestions of the areas to retire to which give the opportunity to be right by the sea, lots of greenery and with places to walk, cycle, with cafe culture, clubs, gym and up to an hour from an airport and with a community spirit. There are so many beautiful places to choose from and we would need to be NSW.
starlight7
I reckon Port Stephens is a lovely area. I have never lived there, only visited, but I think it is really beautiful up there.
Marisawright
Where is your family? There are so many nice coastal towns but some are quieter than others. Port Macquarie is becoming popular with retirees and they even have a theatre with some good shows. Port Stephens is lovely and has the advantage of being close to a big city (Newcastle) for all the amenities you might need.

Nanna
Most of them are just below the Gold Coast.

I can't imagine you liking the Gold Coast as it's all a bit too commercialised, and also humid. Actually I was surprised when you said the Gold Coast is less humid than the Sunshine Coast, as I've always found the opposite. Being further north, you'd think the Sunshine Coast would be worse, but it seems to have its own microclimate for some reason. You could consider Ballina, which has an airport. The population is only about 20,000 but as it's only a couple of hours' drive from the Gold Coast, you're not too far from a big shopping centre. Spent this afternoon with a retiree from Port Macquarie - she's very happy with her choice, moved down from Queensland recently but she's a Western NSW gal by birth. I also have a friend who retired to Port Stephens and only moved away down to Tasmania to be close to her grandkids but she was very happy in PS. There is a nice range south of Sydney too - the "hour from airport" could be a bit of a challenge there though.
Nanna
We did discover a lovely area called KINGSCLIFFE Casarina. No high rise, great river for kayaking and amazing beaches. It also had two good shopping malls nearby BUT the house prices were very high.

newjez
Perth's good because when you do actually die, it doesn't come as such a shock. 1

Once you get past Tweed Heads, virtually the whole of the NSW coastline as far as Newcastle has no high rise. Then after Wollongong, no high rise further south either. Jilly
I am the co-author of several editions of Where To Retire In Australia and keep researching around Australia. Australia is blessed to have many great locations. However, it's really important to actually go and do the research before moving..as this can be a costly exercise. List your needs and wants, visit all seasons (the good and the bad), check out the cost of living, what the medical facilities are like, transport, security....the list goes on . I wish you well. www.where2now.net
