partnership
I am looking at a job option in Mildura and wonder what it is like to live in, accommodation costs and work opportunities for my other half.
Marisawright
Mildura is a nice town set on the Murray River. It's quite a foodie destination nowadays, with good restaurants and wineries. It's got its good and bad areas like any other town. Real estate is much cheaper because of the remoteness, though renting is more expensive because the population isn't as mobile so there's less available. As for jobs - it is the regional centre, so there are more opportunities than you might expect, and the tourism industry means there are seasonal jobs - but the fact is, it's a small town and too far to commute to anywhere else. The biggest thing against it is its remoteness - if you want to visit the big city, it's a very long drive to Melbourne. If you're not a big city person that may not worry you. I have a friend who lives there and loves it.
Skani
You'd need to be prepared for hot summers: 35-40 C temperatures are quite common. I remember them having many 40+C days (up to 46 C) this past summer.

Even though Mildura is in Victoria, Adelaide is about 150 km closer (approx 400 km vs 550 km) so unless there's a reason to go to Melbourne specifically, Adelaide is where most Mildurans will go if they needs to visit a state capital, eg, for specialist medical treatment they can't get in Mildura or another, closer regional city. I have some friends up that way and if only one of them is coming to Melbourne, they will often fly rather than drive.

I've only ever been there during the summer though so I suppose that's biased but I would have said hot and isolated.
starlight7
The people there seem to love it, it is a nice town though I wouldn't want to live there for too long because of its remoteness. Hot,hot, hot. The people there laugh at Melburnians for whinging about 40C plus heat in the Summer because they get that every year and just live with it. If it is 40 in Melb it will be 46 up there!
ScottishGem
I've been there many times on route up to my Auntie and Uncle who live in Broken Hill. I fly from Melbourne to Mildura. Mildura I would say is very remote, and very hot. Like someone else mentioned, it's got a reputation now for being a foodie place. Several years back I went for an interview there and was offered the position, but then decided against it. My Auntie said that this was wise as she thought I would find Mildura boring (not to say it is boring, more I am used Melbourne life). I remember when I was doing my research, rental properties were not in abundance and more expensive than I expected. My advice would be to go there for a few weeks on hols and get a feel for the place.

I lived near Horsham and we always drove to Adelaide, not Melbourne.

Hello I lived there for five years. It is pretty isolated in terms of driving elsewhere But the town is nice enough, well spaced out, pretty good shops, coffee shops, bars, etc....and the river area is lovely in terms of boating, swimming, fishing or camping in the area. Wentworthville is a lovely little town nearby, and there is a fantastic winery at Robinvale that has some amazing wines. But there are certainly some surrounding areas that need to be avoided like the plague. Hot summers were fine for me, as I love the heat. Never remember it being unbearable. It could get cold in winter especially at night, but still manageable with a heater (I find it a lot colder in Sydney) Lots of fruit picking and hospitality type jobs. However, many jobs are got on who you know, rather than what you know. Wages are not particularly high, but neither are house prices (both rentals and buying are still affordable), so each balance each other. 99.99% of the people who live there think it is God's own country and the most amazing town in the universe. Maybe take a holiday there and check it out

Hello Many houses in Mildura (especially near the hospital) are older in style and are on massive blocks, so plenty of room for a dog. Dareton and Gol Gol are just on the other side of the border in NSW about 20 minutes from Mildura, and these areas have always had a bad reputation. Lots of Aboriginal kids running amok. But Trentham also other side of the border in NSW about 20 minutes from Mildura, would be a lovely place to live, and massive blocks too as a winery area. A 20 minute leisurely drive in virtually no traffic to Mildura, would be very pleasant. It is about $120.00 to fly from Mildura to Melbourne and about an hours duration, and a lot of people live in Mildura and fly back and forth to Melbourne each day for work, so although isolated for driving, it is not on the moon for other forms of travel

Gol Gol is a fantastic place to live we love it right on the river just over the boarder from Mildura. However i agree with your thoughts on Dareton that is spot on and i'd avoid it. Mildura is not bad there are some areas that you should give a miss though. There's a lot of competition for rentals in Mildura having a dog will make it a little harder and you might not be able to be as picky about the area because of it. I don't know anyone who flies daily to Melbourne for work and i think your price for flights is a little low too. However if you are looking for somewhere that's not a big city but has facilities i think you shoud give it a go. Plenty of choice for dinning out and shops to get what you need. With the added advantage that it's only an hours flight to Melbourne if you want a city fix. It's a good laid back lifestyle mainly however the summers are very hot. I can imagine there would be a fair few people commuting to Melbourne once or twice a week and working from home the rest of the time. I know there's quite a number of people who do that in NSW, living in Coffs or Byron and flying down to Sydney a couple of times a week Edited September 5, 2019 by Marisawright

Lol. Well obviously! But everyone I knew that were doing this, had the flights built into their wage offer, the money didn't come out of their own pockets. I also know people who stay in Melbourne during the working week and then fly back to Mildura for the weekend to live.
