Misty k
I am a 46 year old registered nurse with over 20 years of experience in the US. My adult son (who is over 23) and I would like to relocate to Australia. We understand that things are uncertain with everything going on with COVID19 and that it may be some time before we could enter the country. My question is rather or not it's likely or even possible at my age to get a visa and if so rather or not he would be able to come. He lived in China over the last 3 years teaching and doesn't have recent work experience in the states but speaks mandarin. Thank you in advance for any advise. Marisawright
The cutoff for a permanent visa is 45, I'm afraid, so you are too old to get a visa yourself. Your son could get a WHV (working holiday visa) once international visitors are allowed again (which won't be till next year). It's fairly easy and quick to get that visa, and it will give him a year or two to get work experience in Australia. The problem is that if he then decides to move permanently, you won't be able to join him. There are currently some options for a Parent visa, but the government has been steadily tightening up on them, and there is a very long queue of parents hoping for a grant - so long that the waiting time is anything from 8 years to 30 years. Misty k
Thank you for replying. I see... My hope was that maybe a skilled visa could allow more opportties despite the age limit. Sadly, we are really hoping to relocate with everything that is going on here in our own country. Something never imagined I would say. I know it seems like a moment in time and that this too shall pass.... But I want a better quality of life for us than the one we are living in. Perhaps Ireland, we have distant relatives there. Sigh Thank you again

The age limit for a skilled visa is 45. There are some very limited opportunities for temporary visas until you are 50 - but they are only for a few years, and as a nurse, you're not likely to qualify. 6 minutes ago, Misty k said: Sadly, we are really hoping to relocate with everything that is going on here in our own country. ...Perhaps Ireland, we have distant relatives there. I can understand that. Unfortunately, most countries are very fussy about who they accept as permanent migrants. You remember how the US used to welcome migrants with open arms, but as the population grew, it gradually shut its doors. Australia has been gradually shutting its doors for some time now, too. I believe New Zealand still has a higher age limit so it would be worth looking at that.
