GetMeOuttaHere
Hi all, I am 33 and looking to move over to Australia as my sister, her husband and my nephew are all on the Sunshine coast. I have a BSc (Hons) in Sport & Exercise Physiology and am completing a PGCE to teach at age ranges from 14+ in September. Additional qualifications are Active IQ Level 3 in Personal Training and Level 2 in Fitness Instruction, and a FdSc in Sport & Exercise Science. I'd be a single applicant and would be moving in with my sister until finding work. Realistically speaking, it would be 24 months before I'd want to be put in Aus. Experience right now in teaching is 6 months, by the time I'm qualified 18 months and by the time I'm in Aus arguably 30 months. As a PT I've worked within gyms for 3 years and I've taught Muay Thai to classes and individual clients for 17 years. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Ausvisitor
What career will you be applying under? If it's teaching you can't get a positive skills assessment until you've qualified. Also any experience before qualification doesn't count for immigration points either
GetMeOuttaHere
Hi AusVisitor, I'd be applying as a teacher and looking to teach at a similar level when I'm out there. My placement up to now has been at HE (Higher Education - 16-18 years old) level at a local College and I'd be looking to teach at the same level out there. I should have been qualified this year, but had a health issue that forced me to suspend for 6 months. I'd still be specialised within sport; teaching sports physiology, anatomy, nutrition, biology, strength & conditioning, fitness testing and sports psychology. So I'd only officially have sub-12 months at time of application by the looks of it.
Quoll
I doubt there is a huge need for PE teachers - we had a glut of sports science graduates unleashed on the market a few years ago but as you’ve other skills you could probably set up business somewhere if you can’t land a teaching job. I guess it all comes down to whether you can get a visa with your qualifications and post grad experience. AFAIK Qld doesn’t have a college system, schools are Yrs 7-12 so if you did get a job it would be from age 12-17 which might be a problem. HS often like teachers with a second subject area they are qualified in - advanced maths and science is usually sought after.
Marisawright
As Quoll says, Australia has very few HE colleges. Most schools cover years 7 to 12, so that's what you'll be teaching. The bigger question is whether you can get a visa. Immigration is inflexible - if the requirements says you need two years experience and you've only got one, there's no point in applying. The easiest way to find out is to have a consultation with a migration agent (make sure they're MARA registered). All the reputable agencies (there are a few shonky ones out there) will give you a free initial consult.
