We've had two members get exemption to leave Australia but I can't remember who they were. There's a lot of buzz about exemptions getting refused but actually, the majority of applications are approved - and if you are refused, there's nothing to prevent you making a new application, perhaps with better evidence. Compassionate reasons need to be compelling, e.g. it seems that a lot of people get exemptions for the serious illness or death of a family member, but not for a wedding or a christening. Hey Marisa, thanks for taking time to reply to me. I'm looking for my parents to gain entry to Australia. Not for wedding or christening is understandable. What I find frustrating is an immediate family member is not parents

It doesn't hurt to apply, the worst that can happen is they say no. You are advised not to book any flights till you get the response and it takes 4 weeks. Personally, although I'm sure you would love to have them here, I wouldn't be risking putting my parents on long haul flights at the moment Edited June 23, 2020 by Marisawright

I do have a medical reason and they would 100% take any risk to be with me as I have no family close by.

You can’t get an exemption if you don’t apply

Like I said, the worst that can happen is they refuse and then at least, you know where you stand. And they say that you are allowed to apply again straight away. Flossy82
I think it will depend a lot on whether your are a citizen. If you hold a temporary visa then I think you are very unlikely to get an exemption fo rumour parents unfortunately. I’ve just got an exemption to get back in based on critical skills (medical specialist) but it was hard fought. And contrasts to the press releases there are thousands of offshore people who have had exemptions rejected, for very compelling reasons. Hope you get the answers and feel better soon

starlight7
Well if you don't ask, you don't get so it is at least worth trying. I am sure it would have to be a very compelling reason just now but things will ease up soon . Good luck anyway- factor in that they will have to spend 2 weeks isolating before you can actually meet.
