Hi, me and my partner and our dog areplanning to move to Mackay in November and are deeply involved in all the visa paraphanalia. The thought of starting a new life is exiting but daunting and we wonder if there are any expats out there in Mackay who we can get chatting with!

Would love to find out more about the region and employment for my partner but mostly just want to start making friends.

If anyone can offer us any advice about moving out to Oz and become part of the local community it would be great to speak to you.

G'day mate, I live just north of Mackay and absolutely love the area. Been in Australia 46 years and been coming to Mackay for 23 years. Retired here 9 years ago.

As with most other countries, the economic gloom is upon us, but not to the same extent.

The region, being in the tropics, can get unpleasant during the Wet, like today, for example, 31C and 73% humidity (nice having air-conditioning)....Well we have just had 2 inches of rain...But the sun is shining... During the Dry, the temps range from about 8c to 24c with humidity down to about 45%

Houses and rent can be expensive, wages are high due to the coal mines in the hinterland and the lifestyle is generally easy paced.

A new hospital is on the drawing boards and building should be commenced 2010 Another hospital, The Mater, has only been going for 4 years

Plenty of schools and sports facilities or all types of sport. Magnificent fishing in the area:hug:

How about giving us a bit of info about yourselves, so we can help/advise accordingly. What kind of work do you two want? What sports etc. hey?

Cheers, Bobj.

Hi Bob, nice to hear from you. It sounds like Mackay is a nice relaxed place to live. We have loads of questions - as you know making the big move is exiting but a bit scary and so any help would be appreciated.

A bit about us. Matt is 43 and I am 41 we are bringing our dog Scrumpy and for now leaving our 21 year old son to his university education in the UK (but hopefully he will come out when he gets a glimpse of the country and what Mackay has to offer).

We are quite young at heart and enjoy socialising, music, cycling, walking (Matt loves to fish but could do with a bit of practice!). We are country folk - living at the moment in a small rural town in Northamptonshire.

My partner Matt is a plumber and currently has his own business, he is also an experienced production planner (someone who co-ordinates production of goods in a manufacturing site) so he could work at either job.

I am a Human Resources Manager and am going to set up my own business working with small to medium sized busineses offering Human Resource advice to help them keep their staff and make a profit.

So I guess we really need to know a bit about what type of employers are out there in Mackay. We know that it is a sugar cane and mining place but a bit more information would be really useful.

Apart from work, we need to get a place to rent that is on the suburbs of Mackay. We would be grateful for your opinion on some good places to aim for. We are looking to rent a place to start with and want to be within an easy ride to Mackay town centre. A very importat factor is that we are bringing our dog, so needs to be pet friendly but also want to settle in a community so we can make some friends. We also need to consider our son Zack and what there is for young people.

Be good to hear from you again Bob (it's freezing here by the way - literally, brrrr)

Nickie and Matt

Hi Nin,

How exciting for you! My hubbie and I moved out to Mackay end June 2008 on a temp 457 visa. I was sponsored to work as a podiatrist and hubbie got a job baggage handling for virgin blue at the local airport. We have been very happy here - think you will love it but it all depends what uou are used to. Prior to our move we lived in a small village in cornwall so it was nice to live somewhere with a bit more 'go'. The locals are exceptionally friendly and outgoing so I don't think you would struggle to make friends. You'll probably make friends through work, depending on what you are going to do for a job...maybe not if you're an accountant. What are you doing for work are you a nurse by any chance?

Anyway we've made plenty of friends, both Oz and expat. I know more scottish people than I ever did in the England (I seem to attract them, being scottish myself). we would be happy to meet up with you and hubbie when you get over here. if there's anything else I can help you with just feel free.

I'm presently taking shelter in the house from a very loud thunderstorm, rain is pelting down, and its been pretty wet most days since christmas as its the wet season, but its still very hot and humid, shorts and vest de rigueur mostly all year round. Better than snow eh?

Anyway best wishes and good luck Lorna (& Kevin)
