Central Coast Meet Up

Guest MikeH

Recommended Posts

Hello all!!

We are a family of four, looking to move out to the Central Coast area next year (fingers crossed), and we are planning a recce in March looking at jobs, houses and schools. Catherine, my OH is a podiatrist and I have no talent at all. We also have two lovely little kids, sam aged 10 and Lottie aged 8, who are both already very keen on the idea of moving down under as we spent some time there last year.

Are there any meet ups planned or does anyone fancy a get together? We are staying in Terrigal, and it's not a problem to travel.

Love to hear from anyone about their experiences in Australia and find out how easy it was settling in.

Regards

Hiya stuju, thanks for the reply. It would be very nice to meet up and chat over a Tooheys New (or 10).

I'll send you a PM with our details nearer the time.

My bro-in-law (originally from Wombourne in the West Midlands) lives between the pub and the lagoon, after renting on Wilson Road for 12 months when he first arrived in 2007. We'll be staying with him from 21st March til 2nd April.

You enjoying life there, then? How long you been out?

Hiya Mike and family,

We're living at North Gosford about 15 mins drive from Terrigal, lovely place we walk our dog on the beach there. We'd be really happy to meet up with you for a coupla cold ones at the Crowne Plaza and a gas bag.

We moved to the Central Coast September last year, my husband and daughters have settled really well, I'm struggling a bit coz I'm short on friends and looking for work, not been successful yet but "the glass is half full" does that make sense or am I burbling..?

Don't know what a PM is other than Gordon Brown but I will pass on my email address should you wish to meet up.

Hope to see you soon.... Jill x

Hello Jill, nice to hear from you. I imagine it must be hard to settle, but stick at it and I'm sure that things will turn round. This forum is excellent for socialising over cyberspace (and can lead to new friends) and I would urge you to have a good nose around. You will be amazed how much info you'll get, and how friendly people are. Most of them have been through what you're going through now, I suspect.

As for meeting up, we will be in Terrigal from March 22nd and we have a plan to have a couple of beers with a few people who replied to this thread (see above). I'll PM you (thats Personal Message, not the Prime Minister!) with our details.

Keep in touch, and I hope to hear from you soon.

Hello Mike

What a small world!

I'm coming over with hubby to live on Central Coast in July, and oddly enough I too am a podiatrist. (There aren't too many of us, so I didn't think I'd come across one on this site!) I'm originally from Kingswinford, although I moved to Norfolk about 10 years ago.

I'm afraid we won't be there in March (too busy trying to sort things out for our Big Move!), but would love to be in touch with other pods. Does Catherine work for NHS or private prac? I've applied for a few jobs in both sectors, but I think no-one wants to commit until I'm there! If she wants any info on how it seems to work in the world of podiatry, I'll let her know when I've got my foot back on the first rung!

I love the Central Coast - spent a year or so there 2002-3, and I'm really looking forward to living there. I'm also looking forward to working in a country where people know what I do!

Good luck with it all.

Hello! How spooky is that? We live on Penn Common, just outside Wombourne.

Catherine will be in touch with you for some info if that's ok. We are still trying to get our heads round what is needed as a Pod in oz, and Catherine is meeting the APC in Melbourne in a few weeks.

Where are you going to live?

Regards

Hello

I know Penn Common - one of my friends used to live out that way. But I have to admit that I find it a bit tricky to navigate round my old haunts these days - I think my internal satnav has reset to Norfolk!

I'm more than happy to share my experiences - there are so few pods anywhere that it's hard to get all the info together, and as I have my visa I've been through the whole process. I will tell you, though, that I found it not too difficult. The skills assessment is pretty straightforward, & I found the visa application not too hard either.

Catherine can PM me, or I can PM you my email address, if you like.

We'll stay with my in-laws at first, so I think we'll be in Kariong for a little while. Then we'll decide where to rent a place based on work etc. I'm happy to commute to the Northern suburbs or Newcastle, long as we live fairly near a train station! I hope to set up my own practice eventually, but think I need to learn how the system works before I do that!

Best wishes

Sarah

Morning Sarah. Your reply has really given us a boost, as the Pods process seems so complex from the start and we've been given a bit of contradictory advice. You've made it seem so easy!

I'm going to send you a PM with Catherines contact details so you two Pods can talk about feet together.

Thanks lots

Hi Mike and all, I'm hoping to live on the central coast also, when visa arrives and house sells. Hoping to go to avoca beach or terrigal. Would love to know any info on avoca beach primary school and terrigal primary schools and the area as a whole. You lucky thing. Enjoy your reccie. We went to Mackay in queensland last year , but changed our mind on our destination so now going blind again. Would love a meet up with everyone when we finally arrive too. Good luck.:spinny:

Hello Wendy, thanks for the post.

We are planning to use our time in Terrigal to do "normal" things like getting haircuts (I've always wanted to look like Shane Warne), going on public transport and checking out public services, all so we can compare them to the UK.

But not in a Wanted Down Under way with the flippy flags...

We are planning to look at schools and education standards in general, as we have 2 kids aged 10 and 8, so this will be vitally important to our decision. I'll keep you posted with what we find out.

Good luck to you with your plans.

Sounds good, I have two boys Miles, age 8 next month and Joe 5 and a half. We applied for our visa 2nd July 08, so you never know we may get it soon. Also had a viewing on the house on Sunday. No news yet though! Hope you all enjoy your reccie!

Hi Mikeh and family. Hope you had a nice time in Terrigal/Avoca and got that Shane Warne haircut you wanted haha. Let us know how you got on, been looking forward to your return and your thoughts on the area, schools etc. Did the kids enjoy themselves. We have a case officer now and have had our medicals and police checks, just waiting to sell the house, 4 crazy offers so far. Can't wait to set off. :jiggy:
