Feeling very lonely!

Hi all,

I moved to the Gold Coast (surfers) in Feb this year to join my fiance (who is Aussie) whilst he is doing a years study at Bond Uni. The first few months were fine and I was very happy with so much to look foward to (we are marrying in Sept) but recently I have been feeling very low and VERY homesick. I think this is mainly due to the fact that I have no job, therefore am finding it hard to meet people here. I met a girl recently from the UK (whilst shopping in a store) who has just gone home for a month so feel I have nothing to do or look foward to. I am still looking for PT/casual work but finding it harder than I thought as I think it would definately help having more of a purpose every day. I'm sorry to feel so very down and out on here but if anyone has ideas on how to meet new people or ideas to keep positive I would really appreciate the help. I don't want to keep wishing time away and I know my fiance is finding it hard seeing me so upset. I want to support him as he is working so hard and doing these studies for a better future for us. Oh yes and one more thing I'm pregnant! (This I am happy about!) :wubclub:

Find a lively church with plenty of people, it may not be your cup of tea but there will be people there that will be social, and help you out as pregancy can be a hormonal time (not trying to be patronising, but sounding it). If you find a good one you will find people there that will become your friends i guarentte it. They will more than likely have a parent toddler group as well for the future.

You could try volunteering. It's a great way to meet new people and with some volunteer agencies like Lifeline, SES, CFA you would gather new skills and develop a network where people might think of you first if they have a job coming up.

Unfortunately the world will not beat a path to your door and you do have to go out and put yourself out there even though that is really hard to do. You could even do some studying yourself - maybe at TAFE or an evening course just to keep you out of mischief.

All the best with the bub!

Thanks so much for your advice and I will to look into doing some volunteer work. I know I have to get out there and make the effort but sometimes when you are so low it is hard to get yourself going. All your responses on here have helped already to make me feel more positive today and also that I am not alone!

Thanks Lesley for getting in touch. I would love to meet for a coffee sometime. Let me know where is convenient for you. I have a car (when Mark is not at Uni) so can come to you or arrange somewhere inbetween. Do you live in Pacific Pines (along with everyone else on here!) Think that's where I went wrong, moved to the wrong neighbourhood! Hope to see you soon, Shonax

The other thing you could do is to talk to your GP. Because of your pregnancy you would probably not want to try medications but when you do feel low there are free sessions available with a CBT psych which would probably help you get your head around things a bit better.
