Hey

I have just called Cathay Pacific saying i am emigrating after an email reply saying i could have a reduced one-way fare and 40kg of luggage.

Lady on phone told me i need to have a 'migrant' visa label with 'remain to stay in Australia indefinitely' ..the rules are very strict...

how would you have one of these??

I have a PR label with 'remain to stay...........

apparently its not the right one! and i would have turned up at the airport with my 40kg, expecting to check it all in!!! I dont understand...

Please can someone help me!? i really need 40kg...but is this not possible is you are a PR?

Has anyone got a cheap one way fare offer for Jan at all?? I have £455....

Thanks!

Hi Cowgirl,

We booked our flights with Cathay last week. I couldn't get them to increase my baggage from the normal 20kg, they 'offered' me a migrant ticket which for a family of 4 would have cost an extra £400! Trouble is they were so much cheaper than the other airlines so I had to book with a normal allowance, gonna send the rest in my shipping.

Hi Damo,

I was under the impression that the airlines offered double baggage allowance if you had a PR visa, with your visa label unused, therefore your first trip since getting your visa, regardless of whether one way or return, or migrant ticket or otherwise. Sometimes people book return tickets as they can be cheaper than one way.

Not sure what that visa label is that they're talking about either.

I had heard that it is at the discretion of the airline, but thought that those guidelines were followed. Also, cannot be given if already validated the visa.

I think Nigelinoz is a travel agent so would know. Perhaps he'll come on and clarify. I'm flying Singapore Airlines and would be interested to know too.

We are flying Singapore Airlines in November. I emailed them and they say that we can have 40KG as long as our visa is un stamped and specifically says "permitted to remain in Australia indefinately". We have a 176 visa and it does say this on it.

Hi Brelly,

Thanks, I have a 175 and pretty sure it says that on it too. Will check later.

Shame I'm validating, as I wont really need the 40kg then, but will on the next trip, and as it will be stamped, wont get it! :arghh: Might try and take some things and leave them with family on the validation trip. There wont be that much though.

That sounds like a good plan. Would be a shame to lose the extra allowance as you only get it once. Ive heard other people talk of only getting the allowance on one way flights although the email I recieved says nothing of this. It might be worth you checking with the airline though.

Brelly..thats what i thought..but apparently not..i have a PR 176..id check with singapore airlines too.

maybe the woman at Cathay Pacific got it wrong?? (im hoping)

The price i got from Singapore and Cathay themselves are way more expensive then other web based travel agents using their airlines!!!! not sure how that works!...

Hi Cowgirl,

I phoned Cathay and emailed them, got the same response though - 'we do a migrant ticket.......£400 more'. If you decide to go with them book through Flightcentre, we saved £100 with them rather than direct with Cathay.

Many airlines offer increased baggage allowance to those people holding unvalidated permanent resident visas but it is down to the individual airline as to how much extra they offer.

Web based sites like expedia and Kayak are mainly consolidators and book large numbers of seats with airlines and then onsell them, that allows them to sell the seats at prices which can be lower than booking direct with the airlines, but be carefull with these as there are often strict rules about cancellations and flight changes, and the available flights are often restricted.

Emirates and Etihad will both allow 30kg's per adult on standard economy fares.

Check the individual airlines websites about baggage allowance prior to booking and if you are offered a verbal promise of extra allowance make sure you get email confirmation about it and take the email with you when you check in -check in agents are under no compulsion to allow extra allowance if you don't have confirmation.

Get three quotes from websites like Cheap flights by Just the Flight UK discount air fares specialist and Travel deals: cheap flights, hotels, holidays, city breaks - travel cheaper with Expedia! for the dates you want to travel then take the quotes to a travel agent and ask them to beat the price, most agents worth their salt will do their best to do so,or at least match the price, and you have the advantage of dealing with a human being and therefore have someone to complain to if anything goes wrong.

Hope this helps.

Mostly yes ,the period from 15 December to 14 January is a very busy time for air travel and therefore is a bit more expensive in terms of airfares.Personally I think £455.00 is a good deal,it is possible to get cheaper than that,Air Asia X for example fly from Stansted to Perth and you can get very cheap fares with them but they are a low cost carrier, there is no seat allocation,no free food or drink and you have to pay for checked baggage but if all you want is a cheap fare they are fine.

Have you tried Cheap flights by Just the Flight UK discount air fares specialist ?

There are some good sales on at the moment,Air Asia can do about £287.00 from Stansted to Kuala Lumpur in January ,so if you were able to get a cheap fare from KUL to PER you may be able to bring it in under £400.00 but you would have to juggle flight information and transit details which can make it a bit hairy !but might be worth a try anyway.

Good luck.

www.travelsupermarket.co.uk is a great website for cheap flights. Got my sister a flight to Perth in May for about £350 one-way. Might be more because of the time of year. Air asia Stansted to KL, then try tiger airways from KL to Perth. Also have a look at Jet Star. May be a bit of chopping and changing for the sake of a couple of quid.

Wish we were booking ours.

Best of luck.
