Guest JohnAvoca
If there’s one tip I can give new migrants it’s this: assimilate. From the start my wife and I decided that we weren’t going to be ex-pats we were going to be Australian. So, we focused on mixing with the natives, not other migrant Brit’s. After all, we came here because we liked the Australian lifestyle, not to sit around bemoaning the lack of soccer on TV or catching up on the latest Coronation Street plot. Aussie’s love it when new migrants embrace their culture. They absolutely loathe it when migrants knock it. I felt at home here from the day I arrived so that was no problem for me. I've got a blog at mylifeinaustralia.com talking about the good, the bad and the ugly of living Down Under. We know plenty of Brit’s locally, but all our closest friends are Australian born and bred. Every now and again, usually when the cricket is on, I’ll be the subject of a few Pommy cracks, but it’s always in good humour and I always give as a good as a I get. Normally, I tell my mate Bruce that I wish my great-great-great granddad had rogered a sheep like his did, then I would have got here for free. Seems to do the trick (for the record, his ancestor didn’t actually roger a sheep).

QUOTE] I'm all for mixing with the locals/Ozzies, and also want to 'embrace the Ozzie culture' and don't necessarily want to socialise just with 'Brits', but for some people (like tinibopper), if you're stuck at home with toddlers - so no school runs/socialising, or no work mates, then its still very hard to meet people, except your neighbours possibly! So this forum is all about getting 'out there', meeting new people, getting to know their friends etc etc Plus, at xmas time in particular - its about family, & if you're an Ozzie you've probably got them around, whereas, the ex-pats are all same boat, usually without family, so its good to get together as 'substitute family'!!
