Where to live in Melbourne?

I am moving out with my young family to start a job at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in Parkville, Melbourne in November. Does anyone have any suggestions of a decent area to rent a house? Is it realistic to expect to pay around $350 a week for a three bedroom house? Ideally we would like to be about 30 mins from the city and somewhere near the beach, but this may be a bit unrealistic. We have been searching realestate.com but there are just so many suburbs its quite mind blowing! Thanks in advance for any help.

$350 will get you a one or two bedroom flat 30 mins from the city but very small. Houses are much more expensive and there are less of them.

Suburbs to look at would be Ascotvale, Pascoevale, Northcote, Carlton but pricey, Kew again pricey.

A lot of people who want the beach as well and work in the city are looking at Point Cook but may be a longer commute. The further out you go the cheaper it gets.

Have a look at the metlink site which gives you all the transport details and follow the tram, bus and train lines out. Then look up.

There is a lot of information on suburbs in the Victoria forum on here as well.

The trouble with the RMH is that other hospitals are around as well together with Melbourne University so lots of young students and academics are in the area.

Good luck, do not despair get in touch with Kate from Moving to Melbourne, she may be able to assist you.

Our Daughter, husband and two children live in Highett, 20 mins from city and 5 mins to beach. they love living there. Its handy for Southlands shopping centre too. Its also got a butcher, baker, coffee etc etc. We visit a few times per year and like it there. Not sure of the cost to rent. But a nice area to look at. Hope this helps Val

Ive been looking for similar rentals around Melbourne (hopefully todays interview works out).

From what ive researched, Point Cook seems to have most things as long as you dont mind newish estates.
