blobby1000
We are arriving in Melbourne in 3 weeks and want to buy a car soon after arriving. The cars sold at garages seem to be hideously expensive. Does anyone have any experience of buying privately? How do you go about this and what else do you need when you buy one? ie what is a rego and how do you pay road tax etc etc PLEASE HELP!!!!:biglaugh:
Guest iselinger
Boy you have a lot to learn! I will let someone else fill you in o the details. Very Important - Green slip is NOT 3rd party insurance as you know it in the UK it only covers injury to third parties. You need to buy additional insurance as well! This cost is included in the price you pay at a garage
blobby1000
Thanks, and how much is stamp duty roughly? Its obviously best to buy a car with a good few months rego but how do you renew a rego?

Petals
If buying privately you also need to check to see that the car is not subject to any finance. Also a RACV check to see that the car is as it should be. A lot of people attend auctions and buy damaged vehicles do them up and sell them. My son's oh bought a golf a few months ago from a dealer and with its she got three months warranty, thank goodness, everything was wrong and they had to fix it. Cars rego (road tax). Pay at your local transport office or on line, pay for 6 or 12 months, the rego includes a basic 3rd party insurance, IT DOES NOT COVER PROPERTY DAMAGE only injury to persons. You will need to top the insurance up to fully comp to be safe. Buying a car from private seller, they have to provide you with a road worthiness certificate. When you register the car you will have to pay stamp duty, I believe it is between 5 and 10%. If you buy from a dealer make sure the price quoted is an "on the road" price that will include rego and stamp duty.

dufont
Sorry, don't know how much stamp duty is and as someone else said you need to get a check done to make sure there is no finance outstanding on the car. In Australia the loan is linked to the car and not to the person which means if you buy a car with outstanding finance then you are liable to pay that finance. We are in Queensland and here you can pay for a VIN check online and this will tell you if there is any outstanding finance and also if it has been a repairable write off. If this is the case then you will need to get extra safety checks done before you can register the vehicle in your name. We played safe and went to a reputable dealer.
