Hi,

My partner and i moved to Australia 4 weeks ago and are living in maiitland, which is near newcastle and wondered if anyone else was around this area to catch up for drinks or coffee as we hope to meet new friends?

Look forward to hearing from you all :)

Hi Shelly

Unfortunately we are in a different part of the country but just wanted to reply and say keep trying. I know how hard it is to meet new people and it can take time. In Melbourne we keep trying to arrange a meet up of UK/Irish expats but the weather has been against us so far this year! But there is one planned for boxing day. Might be worth trying to suggest a picnic/BBQ at a local park and see if there are any interest. I posted a similar post to yours and got 0 replies. But when i suggested a public meeting place a lot of people were interested. It only takes a few friends to make all the difference.

I tried joining a Manchester United supporters club to meet new people but the only time they met up was at the meetings, we went to the local Irish club but they were all over 80. It can feel like no one wants to know, but everyone seems to be so busy all the time. We have neighbours in our street from Russia that are the nicest people but we never get time to call with them and they dont really know anybody either. Luckily after 2 years we met a scottish couple with kids the same age as ours and we meet up with them quite often. They have only been here a year and a bit but know about 10 of their neighbours, they just start talking to people everywhere they go and invite them round or go to the pub, if they dont want to know they just try with someone else.

It is frustrating when you read posts from people in the same situation as you but in a different state! Just stay positive, it will all fall into place soon.

Hope you have a great first Christmas in Australia.

Albert Park. You know where the GP race is held.

Near the pits it has a huge park for the kids to run riot, free bbq's and toilets.

It's also close enough for everyone to get to, either by public transport or by car with free parking.

Good luck with it all
