whichway
My bf used to work at the mines. He did 12 hour days and there were pretty strict rules about health and safety. He was pretty nackered most of the time, I think he got one day off in the 14. There were exhaustion tests and hydration tests. He loved the food cos where he was he had banquets every day for every meal. He said there was a pub and on your day off if you wanted to you could go up to the town and go on a night out. He never did (he says). He did like it though cos where he worked there was a real comradery (obviously i don't know if that's the same for everywhere). He is a diesel mechanic and he got a lot of great experience, he loved it how everything was clean and you did a job unti it was finished and no one was rushing you. He said they spent huge money on keeping their trucks up to speed, ie buy new parts instead of re-conditioning etc. They obviously take health and safety pretty seriously but he kinda liked that. The downsides were, he had a crap phone reception and could barely stay in touch with us, so check that out. He wasn't really the type to go and socialise at night (probably mostly cos he was too nackered) but some did, but you had to be careful cos of the dehydration tests and random breathalising where he worked. But of course he got two weeks off at a time. He was very much a home buddy otherwise he would still be there $$$$$. He liked most of the people he worked with cos they all in the same boat. It's good if you need money fast, lots of the guys are just there til they pay off their mortgage or saving for something or whatever. Some of the guys go up top on their day off and get some nookie, so I hear. Not my man though:nah: Good luck. Obviously this is second hand but he would say it the same. whichway
He worked in Mount Isa and he said the people used to get taxis up to the town. Some people lived there and drove to work.
Guest ezme
My OH does 2/1 as a drill fitter. Some people like the lifestyle, others can't handle the time away. He works 12 hours day, goes to the gym most days, goes to the wetty for a few beers and then eats a monster meal. The only thing he hates is having to do his own washing. Are you doing a week of days and a week of nights? It works for my OH because you have a break on the changeover to nights and just having a change makes the swing go faster. He knows when he starts nights that he is counting down to coming home.

Guest ezme
No, we are in WA. It is a relatively new mine. He does drive in drive out but is only 1.5 hours from home if he ever needs to return urgently. No tv in donga, so has to provide his own but they provide foxtel. No wi-fi in donga either. No swimming pool, but it is cold where he is. Everything about the gym is brand new. Every mine is different and hopefully someone at your mine is here to answer your questions.

Bobj
thanks bob.... ans thanks for the pm mate... i guess im panicking a bit... :jiggy: My son is doing the FIFO as a diesel chappie, but from Perth to Telfer, which is about 2.5 times the distance from T'ville to Mt. Isa. Been doing it for just over a year and likes the challenge...and the $$$$$$$$. Your family should be ok. As I said in the PM, it is a garrison town and there are hundreds of young wives and mums in that situation. Shouldn't be too difficult to meet a few of the mums and start a friendship. Kids...They find their friends at school and on the sports fields. Cheers, Bobj.
kenny01
I'm doing the same. FIFO from Perth to at Ives. Two on one off with a major logistics firm. I know it's going to be tough but I'm really looking forward to it and it pays pretty damn good too. Hopefully be out there sept time, just starting visa now. Guest kennmikp
kenny01 & grimsbypeeps I didnt go to the final interview in Newport for the job with BIS :err: I managed to secure another job offer with someone else the day before so i pulled out, plus in the end i wasnt to keen on the FI/FO situation (spent enough time away from my family through my current career) and they couldnt guarantee that i would be static with the BIS job (even though it was for Maintenance Planner). But good luck too all the guys who got the job offers, i would be interested to know how things pan out for you (iv asked them to keep me on their system for future employment).
