Where are the Pubs???

Recommended Posts

Hi all myself and my partner arived in Queensland in the first week in October. We have moved to ferny Hills and really like the house and the area apart from what seems a distinct lack of anywhere social!

We decided to go out for a drink on the first Sat night that we were here as we needed to pull ourselves away from the never ending unpacking for a couple of hours, We drove through the suburbs and kept thinking that we would find somewhere any minute but drove all the way through to the city without finding anything!! We had a drink at one place in the city and then drove home to vodka in the kitchen!! Anyway we know that there must be stuff out there but it seems that the suburbs are very quiet and as we are on our own it would be nice to find a few places where we could possibly begin to make friends and socialise a little.

So if anyone knows of anywhere nice to go for a drink or a meal in our area we would be grateful for any information. Or if there are any social events that we could take part in please let us know,

Thanks in advance,

Kath and Gordon 45 and 46 and not dead yet!!:cute:

Like a lot of Australia the outer suburbs are very quiet...best to live in the inner city suburbs if you want access to more lively suburbs.

Most outer suburbs do have large tavern style pubs plus a few cafes/restaurants dotted about.

Here's some taverns nearish you:

each suburb probs has one pub , give or take .........if you want the night life go to the city , if your not happy with that then go back to the uk .......most people do their homework before they come , at our age ,late 30`s early 40`s with kids , then weve done all that in the uk and Europe ......we are here to better our lives now , so i for one hope they keep the pubs down to a minimum to one per suburb.............

I wasnt suggesting for a second that we thought Qld would be like the UK with Pubs on every corner nor do I wish that.

Only asking for suggestions to where to go to be able to meet people socially.

We didnt make a habit of going to pubs in the uk but we are now in a poistion where we need to make an effort to meet people as we know that its up to us do do this. We did do our home work, thankyou for this, and I have lived in Australia before going back to the uk. My partner has not lived here before but had visited Adelaide with me on a few occasions. We havent been to Qld before however and am surprised how different it is to other states in OZ with regard to availability of restaurants, pubs cafes etc in the areas outside of the city. I dont regard 12kms to be outer suburbs in a large city like Brisbane I consider this quite close in fact.

Your response made me feel as though I was complaining wheras I was purely looking for some inout from people who have been here longer.

Thanks, Kat

Clubs are around in Brisbane and they are a good place to go as you get cheap meals and things put on etc. My friends who live in Cleveland belong to one.

Pubs in Aus are not the same and a lot are rather large sole less places with lots of poker machines.

People do have locals in the big cities where some small pubs have survived but I would say they are not the norm.

There is a pub where we live but the locals would be mainly the guys who stop by after work.

Sporting clubs are another good way to meet people and you do not have to play to belong they have social memberships.

Good luck
