Best places south of Sydney

Hi!

We are planning a trip from Torquay, Victoria up into New South Wales. Can anyone advise on the best places to stop. We are a family with boys aged 5 and 2. I suppose our main priorities are pretty places rather than action packed adventure at this point in our lives!

We are goiing to stop in Lakes Entrance but would then be interested in any opinions on Merimbula, Mallacotta, Narooma, Batesmans Bay, Jervis Bay and anywhere else anyone may have visited. There are so many great looking places, any of which we could stop in but we want to base ourselves in 2 places in NSW.

Thanks for your help, we will be coming back inland, so any ideas of good places on the way in National Parks etc would also be very helpful.

Thank you!!

Jervis Bay is lovely. We have been there on our holidays a few times. There are beautiful beaches, national parks, dolphins, loads of things to do. If you want to stay somewhere beachy near to Sydney, I would wholeheartedly recommend Bundeena. It is a lovely relaxed beach town which is not too far from Sydney itself.

Take a peak at cape Conran. Coming back inland is, in my opinion, the most boring route I have ever travelled in Oz. The coast road is stunning, have a peak around Eden.

Look in at Hyams Beach which is suppose to be in the Guiness Book if Records for being the whitest beach ever, be warned though parking is a nighmare

These are a few places you might like in the Illawarra, Shoalhaven and Eurobodalla areas.

Minnamurra Falls - easy walk to the falls through a rainforest. Has picnic and BBQ facilities and is a great spot for families. It is near Kiama (just south of Wollongong). Kiama itself is also very pretty.

As others have mentioned all of Jervis Bay is worth a visit but if you can only see one bit of it - make it Hyams Beach. The sand is some of the best the world has to offer.

If you enjoy golf you have to play a round at the Narooma Golf Club. Even if you don't enjoy golf the club restaurant which is kid friendly has beautiful ocean views.

If you like little towns with craft type shops visit Central Tilba (just south of Narooma), Mogo (just south of Batemans Bay) or Berry (just south of Kiama, north of Nowra).

Excellent day or night time views of Wollongong can be had from the lookout at Bulli (Wollongong).http://www.panoramahouse.com.au/ This link is to a restaurant near the lookout. I've included this link as it gives you an idea of the views. Also if you enjoy the beach some of the worlds best surf beaches can be found in the Illawarra. My favorites are Woonona and North & South Wollongong. These are all patrolled beaches so as long as you swim between the flags you will have a great time there (there are a couple of nasty rips especially at Woonona so don't be tempted to swim outside the patrolled area).

If you stick to the Princes Highway all the way you will miss a lot of really lovely little places so take the time to turn off the highway if you have the time and surprise yourself with what you find. You could spend a couple of months in these areas and still run out of time to see everything.

Anyway - hope you enjoy your trip.

Eden is lovely. I would also suggest taking a small detour off the Princess HWY into Kangaroo Valley, worth it to see the lovely scenery and there is a great Inn! From there the road takes you round and back onto the Highway. Also stop off at the little towns along the way as they are cute and worth having a mooch. Jervis Bay National Park is beautiful too.

Hi,

We stayed at Huskisson last year and did lots of driving up and down the coast. One of our favourite discoveries was Pebbly Beach at Murramarang National Park: http://www.pebblybeach.com.au/about.html

Nowra Wildlife Park was another good find: http://www.nowrawildlifepark.com.au/

Have a great trip!

Pebbly Beach is lovely. We spent the day there when we were down that way on holiday in December. Absolutely beautiful, saw some great sea stars and things in the rockpools, swam in the sea and had a picnic with a monitor lizard! Nowra wildlife park also worth a visit.
